Kangaroo Valley pipeline upgrade underway
5 OCTOBER 2023Work to upgrade sections of the 2.5-kilometre Kangaroo Valley Pipeline, including surrounding roads and the drainage system, is now underway.
“This essential piece of water infrastructure enables the transfer of water between the Shoalhaven and Upper Nepean catchments for water supply and electricity generation purposes,” said General Manager Asset Planning & Delivery, Geoff Watson.
“These works will help ensure the efficient operation of the pipeline for decades to come, and vitally, facilitate water distribution during anticipated drought conditions.”
WaterNSW will be working with construction partner Diona on the project, which includes replacing structural bearings, upgrading access tracks, and improving the drainage system.
“Local motorists may see some heavy machinery being transported on nearby roads, some of which we’ll be using to help take weight off bearings that support the pipeline as we replace those that are reaching the end of their serviceable life.”
Upgrades will also include regrading, concrete work and surface improvements to about 650 metres of access tracks. This will improve access to the area for ongoing maintenance and inspection work.
Additionally, works will include renewal and repair of the drainage system along the pipeline corridor, cleaning out debris, and scour protection works. This will help protect the pipeline during wet weather events.
As part of the preparation for works, WaterNSW and Diona undertook an Aboriginal cultural awareness induction at the site in August.
“Thanks to the Illawarra Local Aboriginal Land Council, this induction will help ensure we can identify and report Aboriginal artefacts and sites, and best respect Country and Culture while we undertake these works.”
Work is expected to be completed by early 2024, weather permitting. Working hours will be 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 1pm Saturdays. No work is planned on Sundays or public holidays.
