Lake Cargelligo embankments upgrade update

21 MAY 2024

Lake Cargelligo has been refilled and is now approved to operate at 100% capacity following the completion of the first stage of embankment strengthening upgrades.

After operating at 75% capacity in previous months, WaterNSW has refilled the Lake to full capacity in a stepped approach to allow for monitoring and reviewing the C2 and C3 embankment safety upgrades completed in late 2023.

A WaterNSW spokesperson said the full capacity ensures stability of supply during the irrigation season, benefitting customers and the local community.

In recent weeks the Lake system has received widespread rainfall of between 40mm and 80mm, while the upstream catchment received around 10mm. Further rainfall and inflows are being assessed daily, with WaterNSW advising customers and landholders to monitor warnings and river levels closely.

Activities to improve the safety of the C2 and C3 embankment structures included earthworks, stabilisation and drainage and pipe installation at priority areas.

Minor work was carried out in April 2024 by local company Ross Bros Excavations to ensure construction sites remain safe and prevent impacts to the environment while the review period is underway. Work included improving temporary drainage, improving road surfaces, environmental and vegetation controls and fencing.

WaterNSW is currently reviewing options for design and methodology improvement, aimed at reducing cost, making the construction process more efficient, and identifying alternate supply and material options, before progressing to the next phase of the project.

WaterNSW will keep the community and customers informed as soon as the review of the next phase of work is finalised, including completion timings.

When complete, the project will ensure the Lake Cargelligo embankment structures comply with modern engineering standards and continue to function effectively to meet current and future needs of the local community and WaterNSW customers.
