Latest PFAS testing results from WaterNSW

8 NOVEMBER 2024

The state’s dam manager, WaterNSW, has published the latest water testing results from its ongoing monitoring of PFAS levels in the Greater Sydney catchment.

The results for the Blue Mountains are in line with the last round of testing, which showed trace PFAS levels in untreated, raw source water supplied from Blue Mountains dams (excluding Medlow Dam, which is currently isolated from supply).

Sydney Water and NSW Health have advised that Sydney’s drinking water is compliant with existing Australian Drinking Water Guidelines and is safe to drink.

WaterNSW will keep the community informed as the investigation progresses into the source of elevated levels of PFAS detected in Medlow Dam in the Blue Mountains, and continues to work closely with NSW Health and Sydney Water to ensure drinking water remains safe.

In Greater Sydney, WaterNSW is currently testing for PFAS in raw water in three broad regions: Blue Mountains catchment, Greater Sydney catchments, Fish River catchment (raw water and drinking water).

Monitoring results are published monthly on the WaterNSW website.

Background

Raw, untreated water is not supplied directly for use as drinking water but is supplied to Sydney Water for treatment.
