Nepean Weirs erosion remediation program

Camden Weir, Sharpes Weir and Mt Hunter Weir

Camden Weir, Sharpes Weir and Mt Hunter Weir are located along the Nepean River in Camden. These weirs are critical infrastructure for WaterNSW, enabling us to safely and reliably supply water to customers.

In response to major flood events, WaterNSW is delivering a program of work to repair erosion and restore the riverbanks at Camden, Sharpes and Mt Hunter weirs.

Work at Camden, Sharpes and Mt Hunter weirs will start in late-March 2025, weather permitting, starting with Camden Weir, followed by Sharpes Weir and then Mt Hunter Weir.

Planned work

The work planned includes:

  • stablishing temporary access roads and site compound areas
  • removal of vegetation and unstable soil
  • reshaping and stabilising the embankment
  • placing textiles and large rocks to stabilise the riverbank, and
  • restoration and revegetation of the work areas.
  • The work will not impact water supply or quality, or river and weir access during this time. Environmental controls will be in place during the work.

Benefits

The work will stabilise the riverbank and prevent further damage to the weir structures, improve the natural environment, improve environmental resilience, support the long-term health of the river system and protect adjoining properties.

Future planning

Camden and Sharpes Weirs are nearing the end of their usable life, due to age and asset deterioration. We are exploring  strategic options for the long-term sustainability and use of the weirs.

This process will consider a range of factors including environmental, operational, and community needs. Following this assessment, WaterNSW will engage with key stakeholders and the community to discuss future plans for the weirs.
