Oberon Dam Intake Tower Valve Replacement Works

About the project

The valve replacement work on the Oberon Dam Intake Tower is complete.  The work ensures the reliable and efficient operation of the Oberon Dam Intake Tower and safe water supply to customers in the Fish River region.

Work started on 5 August and was completed on 13 September 2024.

What's involved?

During the replacement works:

    • a team of specialist divers replaced 9 valves on the intake tower that control the release of water from the dam.
    • The valves control the release of water from the dam as part of WaterNSW’s Fish River supply scheme that supplies Oberon and Lithgow councils, Sydney Water, Mt Piper power station and about 230 properties along its length
    • each valve weighs about 400kg and is 675mm wide and 1,500mm high
    • the specialist divers wore dry suits while completing essential maintenance work in Lake Oberon, where the water temperature is about eight degrees.

To minimise impacts to the community and customers, this essential maintenance work was completed during winter when demand for water is lower.

The dam wall has reopened to the public following completion of the works.
