Prospect Reservoir

Safety monitoring system upgrade

Prospect Reservoir is a vital water storage asset in Prospect, Western Sydney. The largest reservoir in Sydney, it holds 50,200 megalitres of water and was established following the construction of the Prospect Dam across Prospect Creek.

Added to the NSW State Heritage Register in 1999, it is owned and operated by WaterNSW. The surrounding parkland and water treatment plant is managed by Sydney Water, while the nearby nature reserve is looked after by National Parks.

The reservoir stores water from Warragamba Dam, the Upper Nepean Dams (Cataract, Cordeaux, Avon, and Nepean), and, if needed, the Shoalhaven Scheme. It supplies much of Sydney’s water. Located about 34 kilometres west of Sydney, it has a 26 metre-high and over 3 kilometres long embankment dam. Its total capacity is 50,200 megalitres, with an open capacity of 8,870 megalitres.

Safety monitoring system upgrade

WaterNSW is upgrading its safety monitoring system to improve how we monitor performance into the future.

Six monitoring stations will be built in this area, and include new monitoring equipment and software, 4G and GPS infrastructure, solar panels and cabling all connected to WaterNSW’s existing dam safety monitoring system. The project area is shown below.

Construction will start February 2025 and be complete by late 2025, weather permitting.

Visitors might notice some temporary disruptions around the recreational area including additional noise, machinery and an increase of construction-related traffic on public access roads. No areas open to the public will be affected by construction, and we’ll do our best to keep disruptions to a minimum.
